Types of Shear Reinforcements

What are the types of reinforcements used to resist shear?

Explain the action of different types of shear steel in resisting shear.

Answer

Shear reinforcements, specifically vertical stirrups and inclined bent-up bars, resist shear by providing opposing forces or redirecting the shear force. Stirrups work vertically, while bent-up bars redirect the force tangentially.

There are mainly two types of reinforcements used to resist shear: vertical stirrups and inclined bent-up bars. Vertical stirrups are a common type of shear reinforcement that work by producing an opposing vertical force; they essentially create a resistance against the sliding or distorting force of shear. In contrast, inclined bent-up bars provide resistance against shear force by countering the tangential component of the force. Unlike vertical stirrups, bent-up bars work by diverting the line of action of the shear force, thus enabling the action of the reinforcement to resist the force more effectively.
