Understanding Out for Blood in Silicon Valley
Out for Blood in Silicon Valley is a documentary focused on the rise and fall of the technology company Theranos. The main players are Elizabeth Holmes, the CEO and founder of Theranos, and Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani, the president and COO.
Elizabeth Holmes, a Stanford drop-out, founded Theranos with the aim of revolutionizing blood testing. However, she and Balwani misled investors and patients about the capabilities of their technology. Despite promising to conduct complex tests using only a small volume of blood, their testing machine was actually flawed and unreliable.
Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani was the president and COO of Theranos. He and Holmes were in a secret relationship and he played a key role in deceiving investors and the public about their product's capabilities. After their fall, both were indicted on nine counts of wire fraud and two of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Each could face up to 20 years in prison.
