Before becoming an adult, a butterfly goes through the larval stage (caterpillar) and the pupal stage (chrysalis).
Life Cycle of a Butterfly
The life cycle of a butterfly consists of four main stages: eggs, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult butterfly.
Eggs: The life cycle of a butterfly begins with the laying of eggs by an adult butterfly on the leaves of a host plant. The eggs are usually small and round, and they may be laid singly or in groups.
Larva (Caterpillar): Once the eggs hatch, they give rise to larva, also known as caterpillars. Caterpillars are known for their voracious appetite and typically feed on the leaves of the host plant. During this stage, the caterpillar grows rapidly and sheds its skin multiple times to accommodate its increasing size.
Pupa (Chrysalis): After the larval stage, the caterpillar forms a pupa, also known as a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis, during which its body undergoes a complete transformation. This transformation includes the development of wings and other characteristic features of an adult butterfly.
Adult Butterfly: Once the metamorphosis is complete, the adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. The adult butterfly is ready to mate and lay eggs, continuing the cycle of life.
